You can use the three Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy not only in the Dark Arts Battle Arena. You can learn all three curses within your own side missions and even use them in all battles from now on. In this guide, we explain how you can unlock the Unforgivable Curse Crucio.
What is Crucio?
Crucio is one of the Unforgivable Curses from the Harry Potter universe. This powerful spell is used to cause unimaginable pain to a target person. The user of the curse must point their wand at their victim and pronounce the spell Crucio.
Once the curse has been successfully cast, the person affected suffers unimaginable physical and mental torment, often described as worse than death. The Cruciatus Curse is considered a very powerful and dangerous spell that can lead to severe consequences if used by the wrong people. In the magical world, the use of this curse is illegal and leads to a heavy sentence in the wizard prison Azkaban.
Learn Crucio: Start the quest In the shadow of the study room
You will receive the quest in the shadow of the study room later in the game (from level 16) from Sebastian Sallow. You will need to have successfully completed all of his previous quests.
Quests for Unforgivable Curses:
- In the shadow of the study room (Cruciatus curse)
- In the shadow of time (Imperius curse)
- In the shadow of the relic (Avada Kedavra)
Together with Sebastian Sallow and his buddy Ominis Gaunt, you are faced with a locked door at the start of the mission. However, the solution to this puzzle is not particularly complex. All you have to do is use the Confringo spell to light the three fire bowls hanging on the wall. But don’t take too long, as the bowls will quickly go out again.
On the way to the scriptorium: Now you can get through the door, but you will find yourself face to face with another blocked entrance. First repair the stone relief on the wall with the spell Reparo. Now Ominis Parsel must speak to open the door with the snakes, similar to what Harry Potter did in the Chamber of Secrets.
Hogwarts Legacy: The snake riddle
You enter a corridor with several corridors and rooms in which a total of three special locks await you. Each lock has two symbols. You have to set exactly this combination for the corresponding gate in order to open it.
First, solve the puzzle in the largest room with the stone figures at the back. It is best to use Lumos to light up the surroundings and thus get a better orientation.
There is also a torch in this room, which you can light with Confringo or Incendo. To the right you will find the first snake with the combination lock underneath. If you enter the wrong combination, you will be bitten and lose some health.
That is the solution:
You must select the two symbols on the left-hand side of the gate in exactly the same order at the snake lock.
Now go through the open gate, read the next note from Noctua Gaunt, open the chest containing a first class hat and then turn left. Here you will find the second locked door, again with symbols. However, you won’t be able to open it until later.
Now run back to the beginning and interact with the second combination lock. These are the two symbols that can be seen on the door directly to your right.

Now run up the stairs, follow the corridor and then jump down into the next room. Here you will find another torch, another note from Noctua Gaunt and the third snake puzzle.

Learn the Cruciatus curse (Crucio)
Now you are just before the scriptorium, there is only one more small challenge to overcome. Climb back up the ledge and follow the corridor back. Go to the second door that could not be opened before. In front of you, you will see a door with tortured faces on it, while behind you the gate closes and locks you in.
The solution to this plight is rather unattractive, but it does have a practical benefit for you. You have to use Crucio on someone for the door to open. In the conversation options with Sebastian, you have a total of three possibilities.
- All right, I don’t want to learn the Cruciatus Curse.
- I want to learn the Cruciatus curse. But you have to perform it on me.
- Teach me the Cruciatus Curse and I’ll perform it on you.
If you choose the first option, you will progress in this quest, but you will not learn Crucio. As there is currently no known alternative to learning Crucio, you should think carefully about whether you really want to miss out on this option.
When you finally arrive at the Scriptorium, you will find Slytherin’s spellbook. If you go up the stairs, you will find the exit to get back to Slytherin’s dungeon. If you also want to learn the other two Unforgivable Curses, you should visit Sebastian Sallow again as soon as he has a new mission for you.
